Port Arthur Historic Site Memorial Tree removal – Stage 2


In the autumn of 2013, PAHSMA undertook the first stage of the Renewal Plan for the Soldiers Memorial Avenue on the Port Arthur Historic Site. The Avenue was planted in 1918 by the local community to commemorate men who had served in WW1, and as it approached 100 years in age, many of the trees had entered into a state of decline, and some had already been removed and never replaced.  The Renewal Plan was developed by an arboriculture consultancy in response to the recommendation made in the Conservation Management Plan that identified the best way to maintain the heritage values associated with the Avenue was to remove and replant the remaining macrocarpa trees in blocks over a defined period of time.
